To Delete or not to delete SYSTEM.DEAD.LETTER.QUEUE messages?

  1. Load MQ explorer
  2. Show the queue manager that contains dead letter queue messages
  3. Go to the queues, specifically the SYSTEM.DEAD.LETTER.QUEUE
  4. Right click on it and select “Browse Messages”
  5. Select a message and click the “properties” button and then on the “dead letter headers” tab.
  6. Look at the “Destination Queue”
  • if the message is destined to a “SYSTEM” type queue, check that the destination queue is not full. If it is delete the messages in the detination queue and the delete the messages in the dead letter queue and you are done.
  • If the message is for a “JMS” queue and this is a store server queue manager, open a ticket with 360C and contact level 3 support to have the messages saved to a file so you can attach them to the ticket. (Note that if the “Reason code” in the dead letter tab indicates 3023 there is already a ticket open with 360 C on that one, so you can just delete the messages and you are done.
  • If the message is destined for a POSLOG or EJ then contact level 3 support to have the errors investigated and the messages re-queued.
